Hue being a world-renowned gastronomy city in Vietnam, has so much more to offer other than its noodle soup and grilled meat. The city has a wide variety of cakes. No, these are your sweet and fluffy cakes. These are totally different kind of mouthwatering cakes, one of which is the Banh Ep Hue. Personally, I think that Banh Ep Hue is the best comfort food in Hue, I am sure a lot of locals would agree with me.
If it’s your first visit in Hue, you may have not heard of banh ep yet. Banh Ep is an original Hue snack from the small beach town of Thuan An. Currently, food tours do not include banh ep on their menu. This might be because banh ep is just a simple comfort for the locals and not interesting or challenging enough for foreigners to try. But once you try it, surely you’ll ask for more.
Banh Ep Hue is a thin pancake made of dough (tapioca) topped with egg, beef jerky and spring onions. The dough is kneaded properly and shaped into balls and set aside, ready to be cooked once patrons arrive. Once you order, just like pizza, it is set to a small furnace, gets flattened then toppings are added. This is how the food got its name, banh (cake) ep (flat/thin). The heat from small furnace is crucial for this food. Banh Ep is usually ready after 15-20 seconds.
Banh ep stalls are usually close to schools as this is usual after school snack for the students. Banh ep is just 2.000 VND per plate. You will definitely have high stack of plates when you are done. You can also bring this to your home country as there’s a dried version of this simple yet delicious snack that’s perfect gift for kids and even adults. You can munch it while watching a movie at home.
